Quelle première journée! Lever à 3 h du matin pour finaliser les bagages (le vol à Stef décolle à 7 h), taxi, aéroport, blah blah, attente… et moi je décolle à 9 h. J’atterris vers 10 h 30. Une chance que je m’étais renseigné sur les zones de métro avant de partir. Ce fut rapide et efficace! Transfert de l’aéroport, marche vers l’hôtel, etc. J’arrive dans ma chambre à 12 h 50. Petit problème : il y avait un tour guidé gratuit qui commençait à 13 h… à Marienplatz, à environ 25 minutes d’ici. Si je le manque, je vais être forcer d’errer sans but, parce que j’ai pas de guide pour la ville. Je fais le trajet en joggant (pas le temps de chercher le métro)… et j’arrive à 13 h 11, juste comme ils allaient vers la première étape du tour, hors de vue. 90 secondes plus tard, et je les aurais complètement manqués (et torpillé du même coup mon après-midi). J’étais tout en sueur, mais ça a valu le coup.
La visite fut bonne, même si je ne me souviens pas de tout. Voici quelques photos. Demain, on prévoit de la pluie. J’ai quelques musées en tête pour essayer de compenser.

Hey hey,
First day — what a day! Up at 3 AM to finish up the luggage (Stef’s plane takes off at 7 AM), taxi, airport, blah blah, waiting… my flight takes off at 9 AM. I landed at 10:30. Thank God I read up on the transit system before leaving, otherwise I’d still be there. Result is, not a second wasted. Fast and efficient! Transfer from the airport, walking to the hotel, etc. I walked into my room 12:50. Small problem: there’s a free guided tour that began at 13 h… at Marienplatz, about 25 minutes from here. If I miss it, I’ll be « forced » to wander around aimlessly, since I don’t really have a guide for the city. I jog the entire way (no time to look for the subway)… and I get there at 1:11 PM, just as they go to the first stage of the tour, out of sight. 90 seconds later and I would have completely missed it (and torpedoed my afternoon). I was drenched in sweat, but it was worth it.
The visit was good, although I do not remember everything. Here are some pictures anyway. The forecast for tomorrow is rain. I have a few museums in mind to try to make something out of the day.

- À l’intérieur. La légende dit que c’est le Diable qui fâché de s’être fait avoir par l’architecte, a laissé sa marque. Elle est vieille de plus de 500 ans! (plus d’infos plus loin.) / Inside. Legend has it that the Devil stomped the ground in frustration after getting outsmarted by the architect (more details next). That mark is more than 500 years old.

- Munich s’est fait bombarder fort durant la guerre. L’église était épargnée parce que c’était un excellent point de repère pour les pilotes. / Munich got hit hard during WW2. The cathedral was left intact because it was a great visual aid for Allied pilots.

- OK, pour le Diable. Il avait fait un marché avec l’architecte. Je te construis ta cathédrale en 20 ans si tu ne mets aucun autre vitrail que celui du fond (qu’on voit ici). 20 ans, c’était ultra-rapide à l’époque. Donc marché conclu, le Diable ne voit aucun autre vitrail…/ OK, about the Devil thing. He made a deal with the architect saying « I’ll build you that cathedral, as long as there’s no other stained glass (besides the one we see here). 20 years was super-quick back then. So the deal is done, and the Devil comes back and sees no other stained glass…

- Un cadeau de la ville de Vérone (ville jumelle de Munich). C’est Juliette (de Roméo et J., qui se passe à Vérone). Apparemment si on lui frotte une certaine partie du corps (on peut voir laquelle), on va rencontrer l’âme soeur. / A gift from the city of Verona (twin city with Munich). That’s Juliet, from Romeo and J. (which takes place in Verona). Apparently rubbing a certain part of her body (you can see which one) will make you find your soulmate.

Les gens n’aimaient pas l’idée, donc ils contournaient l’endroit via la Vicardigasse, surnommée « Dodger’s Alley » (to dodge = éviter). / After the Nazis came into power, the Nazi salute was mandatory wherever you walked by the spot where the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. People didn’t like that, so they detoured through Vicardigasse, who was eventually nicknamed Dodger’s Alley.
