Berlin, jour/Day 11: On longe le Mur… / A walk along the Wall…

Malheureusement, mes photos et commentaires ne lui font pas justice. Quelle visite fantastique! J’ose croire que j’en connais un peu sur cette ville, mais wow… je suis encore poids plume! Un tas d’anecdotes, de faits et d’explications qui ont très bien complémenté ce que je savais déjà. Notre guide, Paul, était vraiment super aussi (son site : http://tracesofaborder.com/). Une visite quasi privée, en fait! Il y avait moi et une fille de Calgary (Canada represent!), that’s it.

Je suis aussi allé à deux matches de hockey vendredi soir, mais je vous garde ça pour demain.

Unfortunately, my pictures and comments don’t do it justice… because it was amazing! I like to think that I know a little bit about this city, but holy crap, I’m still a lightweight! There were tons of stories, facts and explanations that complemented perfectly what I already knew. Our guide, Paul, was amazing as well (http://tracesofaborder.com/ is his site). A quasi private tour, as well. There was only me and a girl from Calgary (Canada represent!), and that was it.

I also went to two hockey games on Friday night, but I’m saving it for tomorrow’s update.

: On n’a pas vu de sans-abris ici! / No homeless person spotted here!

: À gauche, Prenzlauer Berg. À droite Wedding. / On the left, Prenzlauer Berg. On the right, Wedding.

: Tout de suite après la chute du Mur, la plupart des immeubles à P’Berg ressemblaient à ça. / Right after the Wall fell, most buildings in P’Berg looked like this.

: Maintenant, beaucoup ressemblent à ça. Avec le loyer augmenté en conséquence. / Now, many look like this. With the rent hiked up accordingly.

: Cette section appartenait à la compagnie de chemin de fer, si je me souviens. / This section belonged to the train company, if I remember.

: À gauche, une section du mur « intérieur ». / On the left, a part of the « inside » wall.

: Yup!

: Maintenant à Bernauer Strasse. / J’y suis déjà allé (sentez-vous libre de chercher dans les archives). / Now at Bernauer Strasse. I’ve been there before (feel free to look through the archives).

: Une maquette de l’endroit. / A model of the area.

: Strelitzer Strasse. J’habitais ici l’an dernier! / Strelitzer Strasse. I lived here last year!

: Le trajet du « Tunnel 57 ». Pourquoi tant de tunnels sur Bernauer Strasse? Entre autres parce que c’est un des endroits les plus élevés de la ville, donc la nappe phréatique est très profonde, donc possible de creuser des tunnels. / The location of « Tunnel 57 ». Why so many tunnels are Bernauer Strasse? It was one of the highest spots in the city, so the water table was quite deep, allowing the digging of tunnels.

: La Chapelle de la Réconciliation (Kapelle der Versöhnung). (lien anglais, désolé : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapelle_der_Versöhnung) / The Chapel of Reconciliation (Kapelle der Versöhnung) — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapelle_der_Versöhnung.

: Les cloches de l’église d’origine. / The bells of the original church.

: Le centre des visiteurs. / The Visitors’ Center.

: Yup!

: Sauf que… ce mur était le mur extérieur, et ce côté était face à l’Ouest, donc il devrait y avoir des graffitis… (Fun Fact : La East Side Gallery fait face à l’Est, donc il ne devrait y avoir aucun graffiti). / But… This is the outside wall, with this side facing West-Berlin, so there should be graffitis… (Fun Fact: The East Side Graffiti faces East, so there should be no graffiti…)

: Joli, ces sections du Mur. / Parts of the Wall. Nice.

: Uhh, aucune idée. / Uh, I have no idea.

: (Si je me souviens) Le pont des soupirs (désaffecté)… Ce chemin menait au secteur de Buch, où il y avait des sanatoriums. Quand on embarquait dans ce train, souvent on ne revenait pas, donc on soupirait en regardant derrière soi… / (If I remember) The Bridge of Sighs. This track used to lead to a sector called Buch, where sanatoriums were. When you’d get on that train, often you wouldn’t come back, so you’d look back on the city you’re leaving for good and you’d sigh…

: Beaucoup d’immigrants à Wedding, et bien sûr, ils veulent rester au courant des nouvelles de la mère patrie… / Many immigrants in Wedding, and of course they’d like to get news from the homeland…
