Berlin, jour/Day 7: Retour sur Munich! / Recap on Munich!

Eh oui, revenu dans mon appartement de Berlin. Sans Stef, c’est un peu vide…

Voici donc un petit compte-rendu de mon dernier après-midi à Munich (jeudi). J’ai pris tout mon temps aujourd’hui, et même si l’avion ne décollait qu’à 15 h, j’ai pas visité autre chose. Mes achats étaient déjà faits, tout était sous contrôle et j’avais hâte de revenir dans un appartement normal, et non une chambre d’hôtel.

Alors voilà. Demain… surprise!

I’m now back in my Berlin apartment. The place feels a bit empty without Stef…

Here is a quick recap of my last afternoon (Thursday) in Munich. Today (Friday) I took my time, and even though my flight was only at 3PM, I didn’t visit anything else. All my errands were done, everything was under control, and I was just anxious to go back to an actual apartment, and not a hotel room.

So there you go. Tomorrow, a surprise!

: Ce groupe de bâtiments en construction et de bannières m’intriguait depuis mon arrivée. / This group of buildings and banners intrigued me since the day I arrived.

: Yup.

J’étais allé voir la veille, en fait. / I actually went there yesterday.

Hmm…

« Une bière comme la Bavière. » Donc trop chère et condescendante? *rimshot* / « A beer like Bavaria. » So, too expensive and condescending? *rimshot*

« Le ciel de la Bavière. » C’est quand j’ai vu le nom de l’endroit pour la 2 ou 3e fois, un grand terrain vague entouré d’arbres, que j’ai finalement allumé. Theresienwiese! Ben oui! C’est le site de l’Oktoberfest! Ils sont en train de construire les grandes tentes! / « Bavaria’s heaven. » It’s when I heard the name of this place for the 2nd or 3rd time, a vast area surrounded by trees, that it finally dawned on me. Theresienwiese! Of course! This is the site of the Oktoberfest! They’re building the giant tents!

Jeudi matin. J’avais quelques possibilités d’activités, mais finalement je prends ça mollo et me contente d’un petit tour guidé sur le 3e Reich à Munich. Il n’y a personne dans les rues, parce que j’ai appris que c’était congé. Beaucoup de congés en Bavière! (Le sud du pays est catholique.) / Thursday morning. I have several options, but I decide to take it easy and go on a guided tour, on the 3rd Reich and Munich. The streets are empty, because this is actually a holiday (I had no idea). They have quite a few holidays in Bavaria (the south of the country is Catholic).

Notre guide, Tom, nous montre l’emblème de la Bavière (authentique derrière lui), et sa version nazifiée. / Tom, our guide, shows us the actual emblem of Bavaria (behind him) and its nazified version.

Le jour où Hitler s’est suicidé, les troupes américaines libèrent Munich. / The day Hitler killed himself, the Americans troops liberate Munich.

Munich est jumelée avec quelques autres villes. / Munich is « paired » with a few other cities…

Me souviens plus qui c’est, désolé. Aucun rapport avec le 3e Reich. / Forgot who that is, sorry. No relation with the 3rd Reich anyway.

Kurt Eisner, qui a contribué au renversement de la monarchie en Bavière, a été assassiné ici en 1919. / Kurt Eisner, who helped overthrow the monarchy in Bavaria, was assassinated here in 1919.

Une peinture de ladite cour. Vous savez de qui? Adolf Hitler! C’était un artiste potable, sauf qu’il était incapable de faire des portraits. C’est ce qui a empêché son entrée à l’École des beaux-arts. / A painting of said courtyard. By whom? Adolf Hitler! He was actually a decent artist, but he couldn’t do portraits. That’s what stopped him from getting into the School of Arts.

Je vous avais montré la Hofbräuhaus, l’autre jour? Voici l’intérieur. Adolf y a fait des discours, c’était son endroit préféré! / I showed you the outside of the Hofbräuhaus the other day. Here’s the inside. Adolf gave several speeches in there — it was his favorite place!

Un des très rares endroits où on peut voir des impacts de balles. / One of the very few spots where bullet impacts are visible.

Gah, j’ai manqué mon coup d’une fraction de seconde. Nous sommes à Odeonsplatz. Notre guide voulait nous montrer… / Gah, I missed my shot. We are in Odeonsplatz. Our guide wanted to show us…

…ceci. Ouaip, c’est Adolf! Prise en 1914, au début de la Première guerre mondiale. Certains contestent l’authenticité. J’en sais rien. / … this. It’s Adolf! Taken in 1914, at the beginning of World War I. Some say this picture is fake. I wouldn’t know.

À la droite, le seul aigle nazi de la ville gardé intact. / On the right, the only Nazi eagle left intact.

Presque intact. Ils ont dû enlever la croix gammée. / Almost intact. They had to remove the swastika.

Art!

Haha, nice. On verrait pas une photo de politicien comme ça au Québec! (ou en Amérique du Nord, tout coincés que nous sommes.) / Haha, nice. We’d never see a politician’s campaign photo like this is Quebec (or North America, for that matter. We’re way too stuck-up.)
